What is Fashion?

Louis XIV

A lot of people may not know, but fashion originally came from the Royals in Versailles, Paris. The King at the time was Louis XIV and it was all him that created a cultural obsession with fashion.

He was an extremely influential man, and everyone wanted to impress him. This is then where fashion came into play. People would spend extraordinary amounts of money on clothing and jewels, to compete against each other for his acceptance and attention.

It was said that although King Louis XIV had an extreme interest in fashion, he also done this so that he would have a great amount of financial control over his 'nobles'.

King Louis XIV was different from any other court. He became so particular about fashion, that he ordered everyone to wear a different outfit to every formal event! The outfits had to be exquisite enough, to help people on their way to bankruptcy!

Charles Frederick Worth

Although fashion begun in France, the first actual fashion designer was an English man. His name is Charles Frederick Worth and he was considered by many the 'Father of Haute couture.'

He then managed to find himself a wealthy Swede, called Otto Bobergh that was willing to invest in his idea. He then got the opportunity to open his own dressmaking business called Worth and Bobergh in 1858.

He moved to Paris in 1846 and from then really expanded his fashion career. He used to make dresses for his wife and that is where it all began. As other women would see his work and request him to make them the same dresses.

Charles changed the way haute couture was presented to his customers. Rather than allow the customers to tell him what they wanted, he would present his collection to the potential client and go from there.
He became so busy that he had to turn away customers, and although this was a financial loss in actual fact it wasn't because he was earning so much money with his current long list of of clientele.

He revolutionised the way dresses were made for women; making it all about minimalism, and accentuating the best parts of that specific woman's figure.
He redefined the female female shape, by creating a new, fashionable look. He eliminated ruffles and frills, and using in their place slim fitting rich fabrics, that hugged the female figure in a soft, sensuous way.

Finally, he was the first designer to stitch labels into his clothing. This allowed everyone to become aware of his unique designs.
